Website Hosting, how this works.

Registration of all domain names in Canada bearing the .ca domain name is managed by the CIRA or the Canadian Internet Registration Authority. They do not take your money themselves but have selected agents you can do business with.

One such business in Saskatchewan is Link.ca they have detailed information on how a business can register the domain name they select. Your registrar provides you with a portion of the service called "dns" that links your domain name to the numeric address of your web server. This costs $30.00 per year or less plus G.S.T. from "Western Computer Link".

Once you have your domain name registered you can build your web site and share this information with others.
Building your Website Gather the photographs and drawing, write the text of your website pages, and put these together in a specially crafted document. Many software programs can help you design the website or you can hire this done.

Sharing it with Others
Set up your own web server or rent space on a server from a company or individual?

Your own Server

A small web server can be put together using your "Static IP" Sasktel Hi-Speed internet service, and a dedicated computer with specialized software. Often the cost of running your own server can quickly exceed the price of renting server space. The upload speed from a Sasktel self hosted server is really slow.


Renting Server Space - Shared Hosting

* Link.ca has a basic hosting package that would cost $15.00 per month if prepaid one year.
* Sasktel Hosting Packages are the best advertised and start at $19.95 per month plus a set up fee.
* Blacksun is a Saskatchewan company who rent space for $10.00 per month plus a set up fee.
* Canada Post provides web hosting at $15.95 per month.

What do all plans have in common? They have a confusing assortment of limitations and benefits.


What I am offering?

* You select a CIRA approved registrar and purchases your reserved domain name.

I will provide "shared hosting services" and technical support package so you have a total budget.
o Up to 200 MB of total storage. Additional at $1.50 month for 10 MB
o Up to 10 GB of traffic each month. Additional $6.00 month for each 1 GB exceeding 10 GB.
o Up to five sub-domain names, i.e. whatever.example.ca each with separate services.
o Up to twenty email accounts. i.e. your.name@example.ca
o Any number of email alias can be set up. dan.hunt@example.ca bounced to dan.r.hunt@example.com
o Any number of announcement lists. Sign up customers to receive targeted email announcements.
o Any number of discussion email lists.
o Guest book service allows visitors to leave comments on custom pages on your site.
o These shared hosting services are purchased from an enterprise class hosting provider.

I will provide up to 30 min. technical support each month to accomplish the following:
o I will assist in the set up of any "shared hosting services" mentioned above as requested by email.
o I will update the site's static content pages up to twice each month as requested by email.
o I will initially provide and implement a simple web site design for promotional photo's and text.
The Technical support time not requested in each month is not transferable to the next.

What are the costs?

Shared Hosting Services are available for $10.00 per month billed annually in advance.

When addition technical support services are required I will provide notification. Support is available at $40.00 per hour billable in 15 minute increments. An invoice for technical support will be provided when three hours have been provided, or upon request.
